Images and stories to understand the work
“I am particularly grateful for this experience, which brought to my eyes and to my knowledge fundamental life stories.
History in the flesh: made by work, by silent lives, which, thanks to the contestants, have been brought to light and will accompany us throughout the year in our calendar.
The story saves us. It saves memory.
Save the tenacious courage of millions of workers who every day make the history of a family, of a place, of a person, of remaining human.
The photographs we received are of high narrative and often technical quality. It was hard work to get to a podium.
I think we all won. Thanks to everyone: to the contestants, to those who have given themselves to their gaze, to those who will vibrate to their stories"
Annalisa Vandelli, President of the Jury of the photo contest “Decent and Inclusive Work”.
The awards ceremony of the international photography competition “Decent and Inclusive Work” to celebrate the winners, participants and works that best represented the theme of decent work (or its opposite).
The award ceremony, also followed remotely from Italy, was introduced by Abdulrazak Mohamed Ibrahim, coordinator of the INFORMA.L. AID 012590/03/0 project, who welcomed the participants by presenting the project and its objectives.
This was followed by contributions from Rita Tassoni and Fiorella Prodi representing Nexus ER and from Annalisa Vandelli who described the selection process of the photographs received and the criteria used to evaluate the works.
The award ceremony concluded the event and as underlined by Abdulrazak Mohamed Ibrahim «The INFORMA.L. project is a demonstration of what can be achieved by working together, with a concrete look to the future».
The next step will be the publication of the 2025 calendar, which will collect the most representative images of the competition. Available in digital and paper format (in Italian and English), the calendar will serve to raise public awareness on the issues of decent and inclusive work.

I wanted to answer the call also with an image that tells the story of the fish smoking sector, exploring through my shots the fragile balance between the dignity of a traditional job and the heavy consequences it has on the health and safety of workers. The precarious working conditions, often ignored at an international level, raise a crucial question: how noble can a job be considered if it involves such serious risks for those who do it?”
3rd place (tie): Emanuele Favalli
Ravenna Marina, 2024
I wanted to represent the love that biologists put into saving these turtles regardless of their skin color, their creed and their sexual orientation… The most important thing that binds them is the LOVE they have for their work and for the nature they must safeguard!”

The construction of infrastructures and new neighborhoods and urban improvement are always a means to fight unemployment and increase the income of peoples and countries, but also the social tool for the construction of a conscious and free human fabric.
The INFORMA.L. project is an initiative dedicated to promoting the sustainable transition from the informal to the formal economy in Somalia, with the aim of promoting inclusive growth, social dialogue, peace and human rights.
Implemented thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Somali partners, the project focuses on improving working conditions and creating dignified opportunities for women and men.
The international photography competition “Decent and Inclusive Work” has taken place in this context, collecting photographs that document working conditions around the world and open a space for reflection on the challenges and opportunities of creating decent and inclusive work.
